The grass is greener…in a terrarium

This Sunday, I’ve been listening to South African jazz (Jimmy Dludlu, Caiphus Semenya, Hugh Masekela) and missing home. The music reminded me how powerful art and creativity are, and how good it feels to make something from scratch.

Last week, a friend and I went to a terrarium-making class (think “garden in a jar”). We loved it so much that we turned ours into a lamp! What stood out most wasn’t the end result, but the feeling: I was completely absorbed and in flow.

Flow is that sweet spot where time disappears, you’re deeply focused, and you feel fully alive. The last time I experienced it this strongly was back in secondary school, in the clay room. I could spend hours there without even noticing.

This terrarium reminded me of how important it is to invite creativity into our lives. So often we work just to earn the money to do the “fun” things outside of work. But what if we could access that flow, that joy, every day?

That question has been on my heart. And so…drumroll please…I’ve taken a new part time non-clinical role that gives me more time and energy to create. This means I’ll be reducing my clinical hours (and I’ll miss connecting with some of you in that space), but I’m excited for this new phase. I’ll keep you updated as the journey unfolds.

Now I’d love to hear from you:

·       What helps you find flow in your day?

·       What are your creative outlets right now?

This week I have been…

Reading
Million Dollar Weekend by Noah Kagan - a practical guide for launching or growing a side hustle.

Watching
Better Call Saul (Netflix) - storytelling and cinematography at their best.

Listening
“Imithandazo” by Kabza De Small & Mthunzi ft. Young Stunna, DJ Maphorisa & more – saw them live, recently at Piano People in the Park. We danced until our feet hurt and we lost our voices!

Here’s to a week filled with creativity, joy, and flow.

If you enjoyed this reflection, feel free to share and stay tuned for more insights and stories in next month’s newsletter.
